An Update for Writers

For existing and prospective writers, things are changing (slightly)

Hello, I’m writing this on a sunny, Easter Sunday morning. For those of you who celebrate Easter, I hope you are having an enjoyable weekend. Things are progressing with A Thousand Lives in the right direction, and I’m very pleased that so many writers have chosen to publish their stories with us. In December, when this was merely an idea of mine, I had no idea how far it would go.

There are a few announcements that I’m just going to explain in this short post. I write about these changes in our newsletter (The Monthly Edition), but I figured prospective writers or even current writers might not be subscribed to that. By all means, subscribe if you would like a selection of stories delivered straight to your inbox every month (it’s free!).

How Our Style Guide is Helping Distribution

Since last month, our rate of distribution has increased from 44% to a staggering 80%. Although Medium’s algorithm and what it chooses to distribute remains quite a mystery to even the most experienced writers on the platform, sticking to their editorial guidelines certainly helps.

The Style Guide that I wrote back in March aimed to do just that — increase your chances of distribution and grow your (and our!) readership in the process. By sticking to this guide, we see higher read rates, interaction, read time and followers because more of our articles are being distributed directly by Medium.

If I, or any of the editors, leave you notes about formatting and refer you back to the Style Guide, we’re not trying to be picky but merely increase your chances of being read.

If you’re not already familiar with this guide, be sure to give it a quick read before you next submit. Although we do polish your stories, the less we have to do, the quicker we can get them up.

How We Accept new Writers

If you’re interested in contributing to our publication, we focus on the following topics: books, reading, and writing. Please refer to our Write for Us  page for a more exhaustive list of the type of articles we publish.

When we first started the publication, we asked prospective writers to comment on the Write for Us page with their usernames to be added as contributors. As the months have gone on, this has gotten disorganised, and comments are easily lost.

So from now on, we ask prospective writers to send us an email (athousandlives20@outlook.com) with their Medium username to be added as a writer.

This will be checked every week, and we will have to add you as writers manually — so it could take up to 5 working days for your request to be processed.

Or, if you prefer, you can use our contact form to submit the same request.

The New Editorial Team

As our pool of writers has expanded and we receive more submissions, our team has followed suit. We now have two new editors that will help manage submissions, publish your stories and share them on social media.

Expect to see comments on your drafts from Sophie F. and Sam Hewitson from now on, and go ahead and give them a follow too!

Sharing your Articles via Social Media

Sharing your content is important to expanding your readership, reach, and our growth, so it’s in all of our interests to do this. We tend to find that Twitter has a broader, more interactive audience, and it is one of the easiest ways to share a Medium article as it’s already integrated within the post.

Make sure to link your Twitter account with Medium (if you have one!) so that you are tagged when we share your stories from our account.

We will also try and share your work on Facebook, Linkedin, and Instagram — depending on our own personal commitments. But it should be reiterated that all this work is voluntary, so we would encourage you to share your own work widely too.

Where to find us on social media

Come and say hi, don’t be shy!

Violet (founder and editor)

Sophie F (editor)

Sam Hewitson (editor)

As always, we are accepting new writers. If you’re passionate about books, reading and writing, and want to spread the word — we’d love to have you on board. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved or if you have any questions.

We publish primarily over on Medium but if you aren’t on the platform, and just want to get involved on the blog side of things, that’s fine too. Email us if you have any questions about this.
